WILLIAM V.S. TUBMAN COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY MAY NOT OPEN IN 2008

Marylanders dissappointed as new administrators tour facilities.

The hopes of the residents of Maryland were dashed when the Vice Presidents for Administration and Operations of the William V.S. Tubman College of Technology said the College will not open in 2008.

The opening of the William V.S. Tubman College of Technology is tentatively 2009. The Interim Vice President for Administration, Mr. T. Dahn Bestman and the Interim Vice President for Operations, Mr. Mason Goe disclosed this information to the residents of the County during a Mass citizen meeting.

The meeting was called by the County Superintendent Sie Teba Neufville to officially introduce them to the people of the County. Mr. Bestman and Goe brought along with them some engineers to access the College facilities. They said their mission to the County was to carry on assessment of the college facilities and advance some recommendations to the Government. They did not say what the recommendations will be. However Superintendent Neufville told them that the tentative time schedule for the opening of the College should be re-examine. He said the LOIC building opposite the College campus could be used for classes while the main campus is under renovation. Mr. Bestman said with the new development of the Superintendent suggesting that the LOIC building should be used for academic purposes there is likely hood that there could be adjustment in the schedule time but however, upon their return to Monrovia, it will be discussed among the hierarchy of the College.

There are two major problems that are the stumbling blocks to the progress of Maryland County. They are the lack of good roads and higher institution of learning.

During the visit of the President of Liberia, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and her Cabinet Ministers in April 2007, the people of the County requested for the speedy renovation and opening of the Technical College. In her response to the people, she said plans were underway to renovate and reopen the college but the youths of the County should start to cut the bushes on the campus and uproot the trees that were growing in the classrooms. With that statement from the President, an independent committee chaired by Reverend Cyrus Tugbe immediately started the cleaning up exercise. The Rubber Planters Association of Liberia of Cavalla Rubber Plantation made cash contribution through the Maryland Progressive Alliance to the Independent Committee and Mrs. Willette Freeman of New Jersey U.S.A. also made cash contribution to the Committee. The contributions were used to feed the workers on the campus. The Committee cut the bushes and trees but they are growing back because no work has been done on the buildings up to the time of this story.

Observers believe that the Government is not yet ready for the renovation of the College because they believe that when the Government is ready, it will provide motor graders or machines for the cleaning up of the campus as it has provided four-door pickups for the Interim Management of the College.

BARROBO DISTRICT TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO REVIEW THE METHOD OF PAYMENT OF SALARIES.

Teachers and Students of Barrobo district in Maryland County are appealing to the Government through the Ministry of Education to review the method use to pay teachers. According to the students, their teachers are only available for two weeks and the next two weeks they will have to abandon their respective schools to travel to Harper City to receive their salaries. The teachers also complained of the hardship they encountered to receive their monthly payment. All of the Barrobo teachers said the transportation cost to travel to and fro Barrobo to Harper is about L$1500.00 which is more than their salaries. Therefore because of this situation most of them will have to walk from Barrobo to Harper for several days in other to have some money to take to their respective families. They said this is the justification of teaching for only two weeks.

Therefore, they are recommending to the Government for the pay team to take their salaries to the district.

It is been observed that when the teachers arrived in Harper City, they might not get their salaries the same day. It is not unusual for them to stand in line at the Harper City Hall for several hours before receiving their money.

Sources closed to the authorities in the County said the Government pay team can only disburse salaries where security is guarantee.

Barrobo district is without Government security and UNMIL have never deployed in Barrobo since they arrive in the County. The district authorities use boys scout or the Country devil to arrest situations.

All of the roads in the district are deplorable therefore commuters are compelled to ride in the wagon of tractors to get to their destinations.
