NAMCAL EXECUTIVE AND ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE IN MARYLAND COUNTY

The President of the National Maryland County Association in U.S.A., Ms. Roberta Brown is expected to arrive in Maryland County. According to a dispatch from the Superintendent of Maryland County, Hon. Sie Teba Neufville, the NAMCAL boss will arrive in the County on or about January 14, 2008. It is also expected that a delegation from Engineers Without Borders based in the U.S.A. will subsequently arrive in the County.

 

During her visit in the County, Ms. Roberta Brown will pay a courtesy call on the office of the Superintendent and the office of the Senegalese Contingent Commander. She will also visit Kindergarten and Elementary Schools in Harper. She will visit Cape Palmas and Fatima High Schools and will be taken on a guarded tour of Market places and the J.J. Dossen Hospital. Ms. Brown will hold a town hall meeting with the Citizens and residents of Harper. The NAMCAL Executive will tour several institutions and hold town hall meetings in the 4 districts of Maryland County.

According to the dispatch, the President of NAMCAL visit will last for 4 days.

Preparations are underway by the residents of the County to give Ms. Brown a big welcome.

 

Meanwhile, a delegation from Engineers Without Borders, based in America, is expected to arrive in the County by the 24th of January.

The purpose of their visit is to assess projects that were identified by the County for implementation. Engineers Without Borders committed to implement 10 projects identified by the County when Superintendent Sie Teba Neufville was in the U.S.A. to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Maryland.

The sealing of each project is U.S.$40,000.00.

The delegation will stay in the County for about 3 days and they are expected to tour the 4 districts of Maryland County.

 

The following members from Engineers Without Borders will travel to Maryland County:

Michael (Mike) Posko

Mike is the Chief Administration Officer (CAO) for Struever Brothers, Eccles and Rouse (SBER), a development and construction company, located in Baltimore Maryland.  Mike started for SBER in April, 2003.  He was previously employed with the Federal Reserve Bank for 16 years and throughout his career has worked for National Security Agency, Peterson Howell and Heather and Tower Federal Credit Union. Mike also owned his own retail company between 1995-2000.  As the CAO, Mike oversees six different departments including, Human Resources, Facilities, Information Technology, Community Partnerships, Purchasing and Training, in addition he acts in the capacity of the company Risk Manager. 

 Mike is a member of the Maryland Sister State Committee for Liberia, and has been the facilitator between Engineers Without Boarders (EWB) and the committee. Mike recently became a member of EWB in 2007.   Mike has a BS in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and is a graduate of Maryland Banking School 2001, Greater Baltimore Leadership program in 2004 and Maryland Leadership program in 2006.  He serves on the boards of St. Frances Academy, Civic Works and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).  Mike enjoys spending time with his family, running, biking, skiing and playing rugby with the Severn River Rugby Club which he founded in 1978. 

 

John Sankey

John Sankey is Vice President of Engineering and located in the US corporate offices of The Reinforced Earth Company (RECo), where he has served for over 10 years.  His primary responsibilities involve the management of all company engineering and technical activities, including the design, development, and technical introduction of new products and the development of existing products.  Chief among the technical applications is the Reinforced Earth ® retaining wall system in which RECo is a world leader in the design and supply of these Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) structures.

 John is a graduate of Drexel University and received his BS in Civil Engineering in 1980, and MS in Civil Engineering in 1982.

He has significant geotechnical engineering experience from 20 years spent in consulting companies prior to joining RECo.  During this consultancy period, he worked on major projects across the eastern seaboard of the United States as well as overseas.  Project experience included geotechnical investigations and foundation studies for buildings, retaining walls, roads, dams, underground pipelines, landfills, sludge containment lagoons, piers and bulkheads.

John is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (GeoInstitute) and International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineers (ISSMGE), where he has given local and international presentations.  He is also an active voting member of the ASTM D35 Committee on Geosynthetics. 

 As a member of Engineers Without Borders, John serves as the Vice President of the local Chesapeake Chapter.  He has participated in the design and implementation of student chapter projects located in Ecuador (sanitation and latrine installation) and Thailand (2km water pipeline installation).  Currently, he participates as a EWB professionals’ representative involved in the sister state agreement between the State of Maryland (US) and Liberia .

 

 Michael (Mike) Hanna

Mike is a Project Manager for municipal water and wastewater design projects at Black & Veatch, located in the Gaithersburg, Maryland office.  He is responsible for the design of advanced wastewater treatment facilities, ranging in size from 0.5 mgd to 25 mgd.  He is also responsible for managing water supply projects, including water supply plans and water resource planning projects.

 Mike has 15 years experience designing wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, water treatment and water distribution projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.  He is also an active member of the Water Environment Federation and the American Water Works Association

 As a member of Engineers Without Borders, Mike is the past President of the local Chesapeake Chapter.  He has provided design review for projects located in Brazil, Thailand and Ecuador.  Through church organizations, Mr. Hanna has assisted in development projects in rural Haiti.
